From Bakelite to PCR: Over 100 Years of Plastics History
In the mood for a little plastics history?
On December 7, 1909, Leo Baekeland patented the first fully synthetic polymer: Bakelite — a milestone in the evolution of the plastics industry. Bakelite opened up new possibilities for heat-resistant and dimensionally stable products, such as radio housings, telephone receivers, and lamp sockets. It shaped everyday life and laid the foundation for today’s modern plastics world.
Although it is rarely used today, having been replaced by lighter, more flexible, and recyclable materials, its legacy lives on. At Kautex, we process HDPE, LDPE, PP, PVC, PETG and PCR to create sustainable, functional, and versatile plastic packaging for the modern market.
