Kautex’s SCR systems: the solution to meet NOx emissions standards

emissions

Nitrogen oxide (NOx) is the by-product of a diesel-powered engine and is a real concern with regards to environmental sustainability and clear air requirements. Further testing solutions such as Real Driving Emissions (RDE) means the traditional simulated "test lab" results don't always equate with on-the-road testing. The change in testing format and the increased scrutiny on diesel engines in recent months means OEMs will struggle to meet the Euro 6 requirements of max. 80 mg/km mandated in 2014.

The solution is an SCR system developed by Kautex Textron who is a pioneer of the SCR development with more than 10 years of serial production experience. Our SCR system injects AdBlue®/DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid: urea/water solution) into the exhaust system, reducing the harmful NOx emission to the simple compounds water and nitrogen. SCR systems can reduce NOx by approximately 85% (98% less than EU 4/5) and improves fuel consumption by 8%.

AdBlue® is stored in a container separate from the diesel fluid – hence, the SCR system. Specific technologies are required to manage the Ad Blue® appropriately. With more than a decade of experience in SCR processes and technology, we are well-prepared to address RDE and other NOx emission requirements for passenger cars as well as for heavy-duty trucks.

Design and testing expertise to satisfy the end customer

To maintain the performance of the SCR system, AdBlue® must be replaced as it is consumed. This is an easy maintenance step that can be done by the end customer. With more than 30 years of liquid handling experience and internal testing, Kautex has developed expertise in fluid dynamics, designing and developing the ideal filler pipe assembly to manage filling performance without spillage.

Slosh noise (the sound of fluid moving with a tank) has increasingly become a concern for end customers, especially with the increase of start-stop driving technology. Kautex's in-house acoustic experts work with our engineers and customers to develop and test the ideal solution to reduce slosh noise and increase driver comfort.

Diesel remains a reliable fuel alternative.

And it should. With a Kautex SCR system on board, new Euro 6 Diesel vehicles are able to meet the strongest NOx emission requirements and produce less CO2 than gasoline/petrol engines. This will become more important with upcoming CO2 fleet emission targets and penalties.

Two production methods: Blow Molding and Injection Molding

Blowmold

In its 3rd generation of SCR production, Kautex introduced injection molding as a practical alternative to conventional blow molding techniques. Drawing upon more than 80 years of experience plastics technology, Kautex offers a cost-effective injection molding solution for SCR systems that meets the quality and safety standards OEMs have come to expect from Kautex.

The choice between available production technologies is influenced by several factors such as production volume and complexity. By offering the option of blow molding or injection molding,  Kautex offers the best possible solution for numerous applications.

Injection Molding: The latest innovation in a proven technology

SCR

Conventional blow molding solutions are a cost-effective, demonstrated production method for SCR tanks to AdBlue® fluid management. For customers who require a more customized solution, lower weight or high volumes / run rates, Kautex's Injection Molding SCR solution provides some advantages to our conventional technology:

  • Reduced wall thickness leading to an overall reduction in tank weight
  • Simplified assembly through the use on integrated injected parts
  • Increased flexibility of shape/design with unique tooling built to meet the customers' unique requirements
  • Improved tolerance
